Rid of Former Ties by TheMichaelMacRae Rid of Former Ties by TheMichaelMacRae
His initial thoughts were primordial and not for many hours did the fragmented memories coalesce to make sense of the world he found himself in. Ancient machinery, even in its time having been hastily ramshackeled together, now sits stale and frigid though miraculously functional. Everything was the same but devoid of the feverish activity and echoing calls of the loudspeakers that beckoned him to his slumber over a century ago. The gallery was still. Long before his new brain could recall the words to theorize what events took place in his absence he knew that everything was exactly as he had wanted it. Everything was as it should be.

Your work is magnificent! Tell me, how do you set up your art? Do you make thumbnails? I'm really having trouble with environments, mainly technical and non-organic forms.. To have that being crawl out of that machine would be a horendous task for me. D: But one can learn. :) How you got so skilled in it I'd love to know?

I don't follow a strict set of guidelines to make my pictures. Sometimes I thumbnail a lot, sometimes I just wing it. Sometimes I paint with big blobs of color and then slowly whittle out the details, other times I do full line art first and then put color in behind.

There is no secret formula for being good at anything I think. It all has to do with how much time you put into it and how much drive you have to want to be better. Paint lots, draw lots and bit by bit you start to rationalize how things look in your head- you develop a rule set that is all your own because you made it.

For painting mechanical things... use straight lines and perspective!

Thank you! Your words help me understand! I will have to experiment way more. :)
Do you have a tip on where I should start in order to learn drawing scapes and architecture? I've mostly drawn people, completely neglecting environments. Is drawing after photos and real-life buildings a good start?

Find reference photos/paintings, but don't draw them, draw from them. try to capture the scene from the reference you're using but do it from a different angle/ re arrange the elements. Basically, don't copy.

That's a lovely story behind this beautiful piece. I wonder, is it meant to be bittersweet? The way things should be, is he happy about this, or accepting of it? (Really interested in your story!)
I love the lighting, and I love the song you've paired with this

The synopsis behind this is that he was part of a large group of people that were put in these pods and transformed into a breed of bio mechanical humanoids that could survive in the decimated landscape and hopefully rebuild society and lead what few humans remained. This process takes a long time, around 150 years. After he emerges from his pod he finds he is last one to wake up. The bunker they were in has been partially destroyed and there is no evidence left as to the whereabouts of his compatriots. He is immediately entranced by his predicament, he's alone, he's free. So he goes off to become whatever he chooses. He leaves and never looks back because he doesn't care.

Cool! just wondering though, in the area below his hips, did you intend his figure to be 100% black? on my screen its a large dark-grey patch against the pure black of the inside of the pod.

Yeah on my tablet it's so dark that you can't make out any shapes at all, but it seems on other computers that area is much more defined, I'm going to go back and fix it

The creature reminds me of the Slenderman a bit.  Especially if you add the "Experiment 84-B" story into the mix...

And, replying to your last sentense of the artwork's description ("After looking at this again, I'm a little disappointed by how rough it all is. I made it quite quickly. I may go back and tidy it up a bit."), I can honestly say: Shut up! Stare It's perfect!
Just kidding, of course! :D
